Everyone wants to be at the top of the search engine list when their company name, business or service is entered in the search. There are no "search engine secrets", just hard work. The "keywords" for you site are most important; those words that best describe your enterprise or service. They should be unique and accurate. Your "keywords" are obtained through the meta tags on your page, or the words in the top of your page text. Careful and thoughtful selection of your "keywords" will increase your chances of coming out towards the top of the list. The results as to who appears at the top of the major search engine lists varies from week to week.

Use the keywords that you expect surfers to use to locate your site and enter those words in the search windows of the major search engines. carefully review the sites that come up, look at the keywords they have used (go to view in your browser and click on page source) as the code comes up in the source window. Review the meta tags and look at the first few paragraphs of the text.

It is important that your title be as descriptive as possible and that it contains some of your important keywords, for example the title "Sharp's Motel" will not be as effective as "Sharp's Tourist Motel, Castlegar, British Columbia" where my keywords might have been "tourist, Castlegar, British Columbia". These words should also be used in the text, especially two word phrases as some search engines do not read the meta tags but only read your text. You can try out different words at the keyword suggestion tool at overture or try Wordtracker's free trail for your key word list. You can register the URL of your page there, then check back after 24 hours to see how effective they were (put them in the search box). Use your major selected keywords in the , the <META> tags, comment tags, ALT codes and top-of-page displayed text. Use key words in your opening sentence. </p> <p> Allow three to five weeks for your search engine submissions to show up in their respective engines. If they do not show up (a common occurrence) re-submit. If you are dissatisfied with the results you can review your keywords and their usage. Either increasing or decreasing their frequency may change the results. </p> <p> Search engine placement can be determined by the use of tools that are available on the Internet.
