ADSL or Cable Which is Faster?Internet access versus Cable Internet access. ADSL services are now available, in some areas, either directly through BC Tel or through one of their partners. If you wish ADSL service in your home or business, and if it is available in your area it doesn't require a dedicated separate phone line but will require an adaptive device for your computer (ranging from a one time cost of $70 to $100). Internet Service, through your cable company, requires a "box" that sits on your TV (one time expense of $60).Keynote Systems Ltd. a US company has conducted the industry first quantitative, objective measurements that reveal the performance difference between Internet Cable service and ADSL. Their findings indicated that the data access speed through either medium is directly affected by the time of day when it is used. ADSL is 17% faster than Cable from 5 P.M. to 11 P.M. and 8% slower than cable during business hours 8 am - 5 pm. It seems, with Internet cable vision, as more people use it at the same time data transmission noticeably slows down. Price wise, how do they compare? Well that depends on your situation; if you receive the Complete Internet service direct from BC Tel Multimedia Gateway you pay $38-69/month, or $25 - $48/month with a cable modem, if you receive it from one of their partners you may end up paying $30 - $60/month (the ISP cost is included in this price) plus $150-$175 one time for the connecting device from you machine to the ADSL line. Is the enhanced service worth the additional price? ADSL and Cable Internet service promise up to 4Mbs (Million) (more likely 2.8 Mbs). ADSL home service can provide you with 1.2Kbs (thousand) as compared to a 56 K Modem which delivers 30-40k (hundred) to your home. That is for you to decide. |
